Trail riding a 1998 Suzuki DR350SE - Exploring a new single track spot
I'm out in Boulevard, CA today testing out the old DR. This is my first time out to this area. Lots to explore here. After just rebuilding my pumper carb and getting fresh rubber on, I came out to knock the dust off. Unfortunately, the bike was way rich for this elevation and wouldnt rev out. I didnt feel like moving the needle clip so i just rode it at low throttle and enjoyed the day!
*btw, apologies for the audio. The GoPro wind noise filter was on auto and didnt do well..

Today we ride the very popular, redesigned Low Rider S. This bike had a lot of fanfare about being a bit of a 'riders bike'. A corner capable Harley? Yes indeed, I found it to be confidence inspiring on the side of the tire and pretty predictable also. The brake had good power and modulation, if a little light on the initial bite. The chassis turns in somewhat lightly for its weight and it main...

    fun day out! I'm considering a DR350se from my XR650l for something a bit smaller.. how is real world road speed, can it handle 65-70 with reserve or is it maxed? thanks..

    • @SanDiegoRider
      @SanDiegoRider 6 днів тому

      It can definitely pull past 70mph but has considerably less passing power than your Honda (I had an XR600). It's does OK on the freeways and would top out around 85-90 with street gearing. With the dirt sprockets, it'll still do it but only up to about 78 or so comfortably. But offroad they will be a night and day difference. The 350SE feels like a dirtbike while the 650L really shows its weight. Good luck! 👍

      @@SanDiegoRider Thank you for getting back to me, I very much appropriate your input. In fact, I just had it out for a 110mi ride-about 40 off road, and yes, even though I've had it 15yrs, at nockin on 60, I'm feelin every pound..btw, what is your dirt gearing? I'm running 14/48 and find it ideal for the XRL..

    • @SanDiegoRider
      @SanDiegoRider 5 днів тому

      @@AzPauly Glad I could help 🙂 For my DR I decided on 13/44, which is the same ratio as the dirt models 14/47 setup. But my combo allows me to easily switch from street to dirt gearing with just a countersprocket swap (easy). A 14t puts me very close to stock SE gearing. And a 15t is taller for easy freeway distance riding, if needed. The transmission in the DR is wide ratio, which helps.

      Cool, Im glad you found this useful.👍Yea, for Harleys that can corner, Id guess this is the one to go for. Ive ridden these LRs a few times now and they do very well in the corners for a cruiser. I suspect some tallers shocks and fork extensions would make these hilarious fun in the twisties. The 'lifted' version would be surprisingly capable Id wager

      @SanDiegoRider 3 дні тому

      @@charliebaker3389 Right, and Google says they are about the same weight. I'm no Harley guy, but it looks like the Fat Bob also has a more laid back, FWD controls ergonomic design (looking at pics anyways..). So the LR would allow a bit more weighting of the pegs and a more natural feeling lean into corners, IMO. And for these type roads, Im guessing that would make a noticeable difference.

    • @SanDiegoRider
      @SanDiegoRider 4 місяці тому

      There he is! OK first off..Personally, I think much of your technique was pretty good and your positioning was enough for your pace. As you pick up speed you can simply bend more at the waste to compensate. But if you wanna GP hang-off that bish, party on! 😁 It looks cool imo. So the habit that really stood out to me was your line choice through corners. You tend to immediately dive to the inside of corner entries and hold the extreme inside line. This makes the corners sharper, which requires more lean angle/weight shift. This also makes you shed more speed on entries to make this sharper turn. And It limits your options when you need to avoid something or shift midcorner. You can only run wider or into oncoming traffic. When you instead enter turns on the outside half of the lane and wait for the apexes, this improves everything listed above a lot. Youll naturally carry more speed, confidently, and with more midturn options (safer!). You'll also come out of corners straighter off the apexes, which will allow earlier and harder acceleration. It all adds up to a significant advantage when done right. This is a problem I still struggle with too, btw. It takes time. But when you do it right.. you can tell and it feels good! Faster yet clearly more controlled. Oh and maybe bring the toes in/up a bit before you tip in. I only saw you get too low a few times, but once could be enough. -A nod goes to @christopherboston1467 for catching that I'll be posting a test ride of your Harley here shortly byw. It was a fun change of pace for me, thanks again. 👍
